Main Scenic Areas & Attractions 2026
Lotus Peak (Lianhua Feng)
At 1,864 meters, Lotus Peak is the highest point on Huangshan. The peak resembles a lotus flower in full bloom, with granite “petals” radiating from the summit. The hike to the top takes about 2-3 hours from the cable car station, with stone steps carved into the mountain face. The views from the summit are absolutely spectacular—you can see the entire mountain range stretching to the horizon. Early morning offers the best chance to witness the sea of clouds from this vantage point.

Bright Summit (Guangming Ding)
Bright Summit is the second-highest peak at 1,840 meters and offers the best sunrise viewing on the mountain. Most visitors staying overnight at mountain hotels wake up before dawn to hike here. The summit provides 360-degree panoramic views of Huangshan’s peaks emerging from the clouds like islands in a white ocean. On clear days, you can see for dozens of kilometers. This is also where weather station staff monitor conditions, and they’re happy to share forecasts with visitors.
Beginning-to-Believe Peak (Shixin Feng)
This peak gets its name from a saying: “You don’t believe the scenery is real until you see it with your own eyes.” The viewpoints here offer stunning vistas of granite pillars and ancient pines perched precariously on cliff edges. The famous “Monkey Watching the Sea” rock formation is visible from here—a stone that resembles a monkey gazing at the sea of clouds below. The hiking trail includes wooden boardwalks suspended over sheer drops, thrilling but safe.

Guest-Greeting Pine (Yingke Song)
This 800-year-old pine tree is Huangshan’s most famous resident. Growing from a granite crevice, its branches extend horizontally like arms welcoming guests. The tree has become a national symbol of Chinese hospitality and appears on countless souvenirs. A viewing platform allows perfect photos, but arrive early—this spot gets extremely crowded by mid-morning. The nearby “Black Tiger Pine” is another ancient tree worth seeing.
West Sea Grand Canyon (Xihai Daxiagu)
This spectacular canyon offers some of Huangshan’s most dramatic scenery. A 3.5-kilometer loop trail descends through granite pillars and cliff-hanging walkways. The route takes 3-4 hours and involves significant elevation change, but the views are absolutely worth it. You’ll see peaks named after animals and objects—Flying Over Stone, Dog Listening to Music, and Immortal Playing Chess. A cable car (funicular) now helps visitors return to the top, saving the strenuous climb.

Transportation
🚆 By Train:
Huangshan North Railway Station connects to Shanghai (2.5 hours by high-speed train), Hangzhou (1.5 hours), and Beijing (5.5 hours). From the station, buses and taxis take you to the scenic area entrance (about 45 km away).

FAQ for Anhui Huangshan Mountain
Q: What is the best season to visit Anhui Huangshan Mountain for stunning scenery?
A: As a local tour expert who has visited Huangshan countless times, I truly believe every season paints Huangshan Mountain with unique, breathtaking beauty, each with its own exclusive charm. Spring from April to June brings vibrant green pine forests, blooming mountain wildflowers, and lingering mist that wraps around the jagged peaks, turning the entire mountain into a fairyland shrouded in soft haze—it’s perfect for travelers who love fresh, ethereal natural scenery. Summer from July to August is Huangshan’s best summer retreat, with cool mountain temperatures far away from the city heat; the dense forests block harsh sunlight, and frequent post-rain sea of clouds is one of the most spectacular natural wonders you can witness here. Autumn from September to November is my personal favorite and the most recommended season, with golden and crimson foliage dotting the green pines and gray stone peaks, creating layered, colorful landscapes ideal for photography. Winter from December to February transforms Huangshan into a pure ice and snow world, with rime ice covering every pine branch and peak, plus rare snow sea of clouds, offering a grand and serene winter wonderland you can hardly find elsewhere. No matter when you come, Huangshan will never disappoint you.
Q: Is Anhui Huangshan Mountain suitable for novice hikers and elderly travelers?
A: Absolutely yes, Huangshan Mountain is friendly to travelers of all physical levels, and you don’t need professional hiking experience to enjoy its beauty. Many first-time foreign visitors worry that Huangshan is too steep and tiring, but in fact, the scenic area has complete, flat pedestrian trails and safe guardrails throughout. For novice hikers and seniors with limited physical strength, you can take the cable car up and down the mountain to skip the strenuous climbing sections, only walking the gentle sightseeing paths on the mountain top to admire the core attractions like strange pines, grotesque rocks, and sea of clouds. The rest platforms are densely distributed along the routes, with plenty of places to sit, rest, and enjoy the scenery slowly. I have brought many elderly and beginner guests here, and all of them can finish the tour comfortably and happily without feeling exhausted. It is a highly inclusive scenic spot suitable for family travel and casual sightseeing.
Q: Are Huangshan’s Four Wonders easy to encounter during a short trip?
A: Huangshan’s Four Wonders—odd-shaped pines, grotesque rocks, sea of clouds, and hot springs—are the core highlights of the scenic area, and most of them can be easily appreciated during a regular visit. The odd-shaped pines and grotesque rocks are fixed landscape attractions distributed all over the mountain, such as the iconic Guest-Greeting Pine, which you can definitely see up close as long as you follow the official sightseeing routes. The natural hot springs at the foot of the mountain are open all year round, available for experience after your mountain tour. The only relatively rare wonder is the sea of clouds, which mostly appears after rainfall or on sunny early mornings, especially in spring, summer and winter. Although it cannot be 100% guaranteed, the probability of encountering sea of clouds on Huangshan is much higher than other Chinese mountain scenic spots. Even if you miss the sea of clouds temporarily, the layered peaks and primitive forest scenery are still stunning enough to make your trip worthwhile.
Q: How many days should I plan for a complete Huangshan Mountain travel experience?
A: Based on years of local travel experience, I suggest arranging 2 days for the most comfortable and complete Huangshan trip, which allows you to avoid rushing and fully immerse yourself in the mountain’s charm. If you only have one day, you can take the cable car for a fast one-day sightseeing to check in all core classic attractions, which is suitable for travelers with a tight schedule. However, a one-day trip will make you miss the most beautiful scenery of Huangshan—sunset and sunrise over the sea of clouds. Staying one night in the mountain-top homestay or hotel lets you watch the gorgeous sunset dye the peaks golden in the evening and admire the breathtaking sunrise breaking through the sea of clouds in the early morning, two exclusive views that make your Huangshan trip truly unforgettable. If you have more time, you can arrange 3 days to visit the surrounding ancient villages like Hongcun and Xidi, combining mountain scenery and ancient Huizhou culture for a richer travel experience.
Q: What are the most practical local tips for first-time foreign travelers to Huangshan Mountain?
A: There are a few down-to-earth local tips I always share with my foreign guests to help you have a perfect trip. First, the mountain temperature is 5-8 degrees Celsius lower than the city temperature all year round, so remember to bring a thin coat even in summer, and thick warm clothes in winter and early spring to keep warm. Second, do not wear slippery-soled shoes; non-slip sneakers or hiking shoes are the best choice, as the mountain roads may be damp and slippery after rain. Third, try to avoid visiting on Chinese statutory holidays if possible, as the passenger flow will be huge and affect your sightseeing experience; weekdays are far more comfortable. Fourth, you can bring a small bottle of water and simple snacks, but there are complete catering and supply stores on the mountain, so there is no need to carry heavy luggage. Finally, follow the official marked trails strictly, do not step into unopened wild areas, to ensure travel safety.
