🚄By High-Speed Train (Best for most travelers)
From Xining station to Qinghai Lake Station takes about 1.5 hours. Xining is well-connected: 8 hours from Beijing, 4 hours from Xi’an, 6 hours from Chengdu.
🚄By Air
Fly into Xining Caojiabao International Airport (XNN). From there, take a train or hire a private driver (400-500 RMB one way, 2 hours).
Local Getting Around
Public buses run from Xining to Erlang Jian (3 hours, 30 RMB). For Bird Island, Sand Island or Heimahe, you need a rental car or private driver. I always recommend hiring a driver for 2-3 days – it costs around 800 RMB/day including petrol, and they know the best photo stops.

Bird Island is still active in early July, though some chicks have already fledged by August. You will miss the extreme crowds of Chinese summer holidays (the first two weeks of July). If you want to see the lake with snow on the surrounding mountains, come in late June – but the flowers will not be out yet.
Q: Can I do a Qinghai Lake trip 2026 without joining a group tour? How difficult is independent travel?
A: Yes, absolutely. Independent travel is doable if you speak some Chinese or use translation apps. The high-speed train from Xining to Qinghai Lake Station is easy. From there, local buses go to Erlang Jian. However, to reach Bird Island, Heimahe or Sand Island, you will need to hire a driver. I suggest booking a driver for two days through your hotel in Xining (around 800 RMB/day). You can also rent a car at Xining airport – but note that driving in high altitude and occasional yak crossings is not for nervous drivers.
Q: Is it worth staying overnight at Heimahe just for sunrise? What are the guesthouses like?
A: Absolutely yes – this is the single best experience at Qinghai Lake in my opinion. The sunrise is world-class. Guesthouses in Heimahe are very basic: shared bathrooms, thin walls, no heating except a small electric blanket. But they are clean and the hosts are friendly. Prices range from 150-200 RMB for a double room. Bring earplugs and your own toiletries. And do not expect hot water after 9 PM – the solar heaters run out. Still, I have stayed there over 20 times and never regretted it.
Q: How can I see the “Sky Mirror” reflection like the famous salt flats? Is it always there?
A: The “Sky Mirror” at Sand Island is a shallow, seasonal pool – not as huge as Uyuni, but beautiful. It is best between 11 AM and 1 PM when the sun is high and winds are calm. It requires at least 1 cm of standing water. Ask a local at the Sand Island entrance if the pool is present that day – they will know. If there is no water, you can still get great reflections from wet sand near the shore. Bring waterproof boots or plastic bags for your shoes.
