Guesthouses in Heimahe are very basic: shared bathrooms, thin walls, no heating except a small electric blanket. But they are clean and the hosts are friendly. Prices range from 150-200 RMB for a double room. Bring earplugs and your own toiletries. And do not expect hot water after 9 PM – the solar heaters run out. Still, I have stayed there over 20 times and never regretted it.
Q: How can I see the “Sky Mirror” reflection like the famous salt flats? Is it always there?
A: The “Sky Mirror” at Sand Island is a shallow, seasonal pool – not as huge as Uyuni, but beautiful. It is best between 11 AM and 1 PM when the sun is high and winds are calm. It requires at least 1 cm of standing water. Ask a local at the Sand Island entrance if the pool is present that day – they will know. If there is no water, you can still get great reflections from wet sand near the shore. Bring waterproof boots or plastic bags for your shoes.
